CMJA participates in the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting in Nadi, Fiji

The CMJA was an Observer at the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting being held from 8-12 February 2026 in Nadi, Fiji on the theme: “Anchoring Justice in Changing Tides: Strengthening the Rule of Law For a Resilient Future”.  The CMJA was represented by its Secretary General at the meeting who delivered the activity report on behalf of the Association for the period 2024-2026. Speakers at the Ministers Meeting also included CMJA Council Member, Justice John Carey from Papua New Guinea who spoke on The Role of the Judiciary in Safeguarding Democracy and Alison Holt, CMJA Member from Papua New Guinea who spoke about Justice and AI.  H.H. Judge Advocate General Alan Large presented on the Model Law on Military Justice, the final version having been agreed at the meeting in Nadi.    In her opening speech, the Commonwealth Secretary General stressed the importance of strengthening democratic principles and the rule of law and implementing measures for good governance to ensure a resilient future.

Dr Brewer also participated as a speaker in the side event on “Working Together to Respect Human Rights and Humanitarian Law” at which she spoke on Human Rights under the Latimer House Principles and Charter the role of each institution.  Other presentations were given by Kingsley Abbott, the Director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies on Decriminalising Poverty; Megan Rock, Head of the Red Cross Regional Delegation in the Pacific on the Global Initiative to Galvanize Political Commitment to IHL, including to addressing the challenges faced by International Humanitarian Law; Scader Louis from the Commonwealth Disable People’s Forum on the Implementation of the Disability Inclusion Action Plan for the Commonwealth.  The Rt. Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua, Deputy Speaker of the Fiji Parliament chaired the session and Steven Thiru, President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association gave the concluding remarks.
