BERMUDA

Puisne Judge

PS 48 $ 187,606.18 p.a. (plus allowances)
Supreme Court

In exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 73(4) of the Constitution, the Governor invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the post of Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Bermuda

Applicants should be Barristers and Attorneys having at least 10 years post admission experience. A sound and thorough knowledge of all branches of the law is a minimum requirement, but a specialization in Criminal Law is highly desirable and experience of Civil and/or Commercial Law would be an asset. Applicants should be able to handle a high volume of complex work quickly and confidently. Computer and typing skills are highly desirable.

Duties of the post holder will include:

a. Sitting as Judge in criminal and civil cases in the Supreme Court, and performing the functions and exercising the jurisdiction conferred upon that Court by the Supreme Court Act 1905 and any other legislation.

b. Sitting as Chairman or Member of Statutory Boards and Tribunals which require a Judge;

c. Undertaking such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Chief Justice or Governor.

The selection process will recognise the importance of:

  1. selecting candidates solely on merit;
  2. selecting only people of good character;
  3. the need to encourage diversity in the range of persons selected for appointment.

The statutory retirement age for is 65 years, but may be extended to 70 years with the consent of the Governor.

The initial term of employment applicable to an appointee who is not Bermudian will not exceed five (5) years.
