Turks and Caicos Islands

Department: Judicial
Job Title: Magistrate
Reporting to: Chief Justice

Main Duties:

  1. Sit as Magistrate in Magistrate's Court and exrdcise the criminal, civil and family law jurisdiction from time to time conferred by the Magistrate's Court Ordinance and any other legislation.
  2. Act as Coroner under the Coroner's Ordinance and to discharge all otehr functions and duties conferred upon Magistrates by any other Ordinance.
  3. Suit as an Acting Judge of the Supreme Court as may be required by the Chief Justice from time to time in that capacity to try criminal cases with a jury.
  4. Act as a Chief Magistrate during the absence of the Chief Magistrate or at any time when he is incapacitate or otherwise unable to perform his duties.
  5. Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Chief Justice or the Chief Magistrate.

Minimum Qualifications

A Magistrates must be qualified as an Attorney-at-Law in a Commonwealth jurisdiction and have at least seven (7) years post-admission experience. Experience as a Magistrate is desirable but not essential. Typing and computer skills would be useful. The Magistrates would reside in Providenciales but will travel to other Islands as the business of the Court, the Chief Magistrate or the Chief Justice may require.

Salary: $54,000 - $57,600 per annum

For persons recruited outside the Turks and Caicos Islands, the following benefits are offered in addition to basic salary: A two or three year extendable contract; housing allowance; end-of-contract gratuity of 15% of salary, return passage fora family up to two children under the age of 16, duty free personal shipping imported within six months of the appointment.
